Do-It-Yourself-1: Building Our Number Machine!

Hello mathematicians! Today, we’re going on an exciting journey to explore big numbers by ‘skip counting’. We’ll learn to count quickly by 50s, 100s, and even 1000s! To do this, we’re going to build our very own “Number Machine” using simple things you can find at home. This will help you see and feel how numbers grow.
Materials you will need:
- Small coins or tokens: (like 1-cent coins, beads, small uniform pebbles, or even small buttons) – you’ll need about 100-200 of them.
- Small elastic bands or string: To hold groups together.
- Small paper labels or sticky notes: To write numbers on.
- A marker or pen: For writing the numbers.
Are you ready? Let’s build your own model!
Do-It-Yourself-2: Bundling for 50s and 100s

First, let’s create our ‘units’ for skip counting.
Step 1: Make a bundle of 50.
Carefully count out exactly 50 of your small coins or tokens. Once you have 50, use an elastic band to hold them tightly together. Now, take a small paper label and write a big ’50’ on it. Wrap this label around your bundle. You have just created a ’50-unit’! This unit represents the number 50.
Step 2: Make a bundle of 100.
Now, take two of your ’50-unit’ bundles. Place them side-by-side or stack them. Use another elastic band to hold these two ’50-unit’ bundles together, making one larger group. On a new label, write ‘100’ and attach it. You now have a ‘100-unit’! Notice how two ’50s’ make one ‘100’.
Do-It-Yourself-3: Reaching for 1000s

Now let’s go even bigger to understand thousands!
Step 3: Make a bundle of 1000.
You’ve made your ‘100-unit’ bundles. To make a ‘1000-unit’, you will need ten of these ‘100-unit’ bundles. Carefully gather ten of your ‘100-unit’ bundles and place them together. This might be a bit big for one elastic band, so you can either stack them neatly or place them in a small, designated tray or box. On a larger label, write ‘1000’ and place it with this big group.
You have now built a physical representation for 50, 100, and 1000! These are the building blocks for our skip counting adventure. Feel the weight and see the size of these numbers. This is your “Number Machine” ready for action!
Design-It-Yourself-1: Seeing the Fifties

Now that you have your physical bundles, let’s visualize what happens when we skip count by 50s. Imagine taking one ’50-unit’ bundle, then another, then another!
- Start with 0: You have no bundles.
- Add one 50-unit: You have 50. (0 + 50 = 50)
- Add another 50-unit: You now have 100! (50 + 50 = 100)
- Add one more 50-unit: You have 150. (100 + 50 = 150)
- And another: You have 200. (150 + 50 = 200)
Notice how the ‘tens’ place goes from 5 to 0, and the ‘hundreds’ place either stays the same or goes up by one. The ‘ones’ place always stays at 0. This is the pattern of counting by 50s!
